Expanding Our Support for Refugees: New Programs at Global Impact Initiative
We are excited to announce that the Global Impact Initiative has secured a new grant at the end of 2023 that enables us to expand our programming for qualifying refugees.
Mentoring Refugee Women and Fostering an Entrepreneurial Mindset
In their native country, women may have had limited access to education, they have not held jobs outside the home, and they may not even have left their homes unless accompanied by a male relative. In our program design, we have found that the most effective approach to their integration into the U.S. is to create community.
Online/On-Site Academic Support and Mentoring for Refugee Students
Gii team takes a multifaceted approach to supporting refugee students. They provide online and on site tutoring as well as homework support and remedial ESL training, helping students bring their skills and knowledge up to par. In the process, tutors build awareness of the behavioral expectations in U.S. classrooms, help kids retain a positive ethnic and cultural identity, and encourage them to stay engaged, all of which are essential for their integration.
English as a Second Language (ESL) Program for Ukrainian Refugees
This Program provides intensive online instruction in English as a second language to adult refugee students based in the United States. The program's coursework and materials are all offered completely free of charge to refugees and is funded by the Global Impact Initiative (Gii) through scholarships, partnerships, grants and individual donations. This accelerated program is specifically tailored to meet the needs of refugees from Ukraine and is committed to equipping them with the language skills needed for both everyday and professional interactions.
Refugee Sewing Collective
The Refugee Sewing Collective provides supplemental income opportunities to Afghan refugee women who face multiple barriers to traditional employment due to lack of English language skills, childcare, and transportation. The seamstresses work from home with sewing machines, fabrics, and supplies thanks to donations. A dedicated group of RSC volunteers provides business operations, marketing, and logistics support to RSC, as well as organizes inventory sales at farmers markets, church and community events, and pop-up shops.
Refugee Stabilization and Integration
Global Impact Initiative maintains a Refugee Stabilization and Integration Program, which aims to assist individuals who have been forcibly displaced. Currently, Gii's efforts are focused on helping refugees from Afghanistan and Ukraine.
Commercial Drivers License Exam Prep
In the whirlwind of challenges refugees face, one of the biggest is securing full-time, well-paid employment. Gii has focused on finding the best fit between jobs the U.S. is struggling to fill and the skills and preferences of refugees.
International Teacher Training
Global Impact Initiative’s International Teacher Training Program utilizes Master Trainers with decades of experience, who assist educators located in developing nations by providing training to meet the needs of the students they serve.
Mentoring
Global Impact Initiative’s Mentoring Program provides underserved students and young adults with mentors who can help them develop and clarify their academic and career goals. Gii currently offers two different virtual mentoring options, each with their own focus: Group Mentoring and Peer-to-Peer Mentoring.
High School Partnership
Global Impact Initiative partners with school districts or independent high schools to provide structured training opportunities directly to high school students on various applicable topics.
Workplace Readiness
Global Impact Initiative’s Workplace Readiness Program (WRP) addresses critical workplace skills. It has a two-tier structure: Tier 1 geared for high schoolers and Tier 2 for college students.
